Day 7 - September 9th, 2010 Winnipeg, MB - Regina, SK

Welcome to Prairie's Edge. You can see the bee-shed on the far left
and the new dome community center in the distance on the right.

We wake up in our tiny guest cabin at Prairie's Edge Eco-Village and set out on a tour of the farm. Daniel, one of the village's founders, meets us on the road and shows us around.

Most of the homes are straw-bale construction, or made with found materials, and powered by wind and solar. The whole premise of the village is to create a closed loop between the land and the inhabitants on the prairie's edge. The world's largest solar oven sits between rows of organically grown food on one side and an earthen-covered root cellar on the other.

The newest building on the property is still being built - it's a dome home donated to the village by someone who wanted it removed from their property so they could build a bigger "cabin." The Eco-Village members dismantled the dome and rebuilt it on their property. Right now it houses a few barn swallows and this year's braided garlic crop, but in time - and with insulation - it will become a vibrant community center. Soon, I'm sure, it's walls will also be graced with the colorful murals found on most of the other buildings in the village: bumblebess on the shed housing the bee-keeping supplies, a Turtle Earth symbol on the summer kitchen, and the Indian-looking vine motif on the large straw-bale home.
Much too soon, it is time to be back on the road. Our bellies full of ground cherries and our hearts full after spending time with old friends again, we load the cats back into the car and head back towards Winnipeg and our big rig.

We say our goodbyes to the parents, and watch them head back towards St Paul in their dirty car. Then, despite the rain and a serious headwind of 35-40 km/hr, we make it to Regina Saskatchewan for the night.
